Historical and sociopolitical analyses studying the origins of the mafia highlight the connection between the institutions' inability to manage the territory and the emergence of mafia-style organized crime systems. Over time, the mafias have demonstrated a significant capacity for expansion, even beyond the traditional areas of the mafia, while still retaining one characteristic: territorial control.
